Genset Locomotive Repower Project - CSX Transportation

In December of 2007, CSX Transportation, in cooperation with PSEG Fossil LLC and NESCAUM, began a project to modernize three conventional switch locomotives to a more efficient and less polluting design.  Each locomotive engine was replaced with two smaller power packs, each equipped with a diesel particulate filter (DPF).  These locomotives are now cleaner, quieter, and more energy efficient than the vast majority of their peers and are among the first commercial units in the US to meet EPA’s Tier 4 Locomotive PM standards.  The goal of this project was to significantly reduce switcher locomotive NOx, PM, and CO2 emissions.

M.J. Bradley & Associates was responsible for project development, locomotive design quality assurance, locomotive procurement support, product evaluation, emission testing, and project documentation.  Emission reductions are being achieved on the order of 47.5 tons per year of NOx, and 2.8 tons per year of PM, which represent 88% and 99% reductions, respectively.  This project was completed in July of 2010, with a total project cost on the order of $3.4 million representing lifetime cost effectiveness of $8,600/ton NOx and $121,000/ton PM.
